That bacteria growth on your roof can really shorten the life of your shingles. Here’s how an experienced cleaning company can help.
A short statement from a homeowner who is oblivious to what a roof would need for maintenance.
“We had noticeable black streaks on the north side of the roof on her 20-year-old Portland home. Initially alarmed and fearing that those streaks signaled the need for a new roof, we spoke to a friend whose roof had once had similar streaking but was now streak free. Downing learned that she didn’t need to replace it. She only needed to have it professionally cleaned.”
What is a roof cleaning?
The customer above is not alone in having streaks and moss on her roof. It’s not a sign of poor home maintenance. Rather, the unsightly dark splotches that streak across roofs are caused by bacteria known as gloeocapsa magma; often referred to as algae growth on the roof. The growth typically occurs on the north side or shaded area of the roof. Though there is little scientific evidence of the harm caused by the bacteria, industry experts concur that it can help deteriorate shingles and shorten the life expectancy of the roof.
Jesse of JNR says, “a lot of homeowners think that the black streaking is normal shingle wear and tear and many replace their roofs prematurely. He says all the roof needs is a good cleaning and treatment for proper maintenance moving forward. A proper roof cleaning will allow the homeowner to maximize their shingle life”
